Team Canada takes the Gold medal at the Canadian World Juniors, in Sweden, defeating the team from Russia 4-2. The American squad edged out the host country 2-1 in the bronze medal game, after going down by the same marker to Canada in the semis, which was decided in a nail-biting shootout.
Canada opened the scoring at 15:35 of the first (remember they count up in international hockey so that was actually 15 and half minutes into the opening frame) and then continued to tally two more in 2:27 to go up to a commanding 3-0 lead by the end of the first. The Canadians went up 4-0 early in the second and looked to be ready to roll over the Russians in a romp. The Russians had other ideas as they got one back on the PP mid-second period, and then scored one more again on the PP with 36 seconds left in the middle stanza. Canada stopped playing the hard-nosed game they brought in the first and were caught sitting back in the second, allowing the Russians to climb back into contention. The Canadians returned to their steady game in the third and held on to take the gold for the third year in a row, and 13th time over-all.
Cogliano opened the scoring for the Canadian squad, followed by Little and Toews on the PP. Toews PP goal was assisted by Vancouver Giants player Cody Franson. The Canada squad rounded out their scoring 6:00 into the second when Brad Marchand put it past Semen Varlamov. Valentenko and Churilov notched the counters for Russia.
Tri-City goaltender, Carey Price was solid as a rock and kept his team in the game when they began to scramble. Price finished the tournament 6-0 allowing only 7 goals, missing the 6 GA WJC record posted by Justin Pogge last year by one goal. Price earned tournament goaltender MVP honours as well as the over-all MVP nod for the tournament.
