Mark Segal lasted under 10 minutes, after the Hitmen stung him for 3 goals on 8 shots. Rookie tender Derek Tendler was put between the pipes and although he made a few nice stops, he was also not immune from the home team’s sting. The Hitmen opened the scoring very early in the game and the Giants tied it up a few minutes later. The Hitmen scored two more before the end of the period to go up 3-1. The Calgary squad got the only goals in the second potting two more, bulging their lead to four goals. The only goal in the third came from a Giants stick late, but it was much too little and far too late to make a difference in the game.
Tyler Fiddler opened the scoring for the home team. Brendan Gallagher responded a few shifts later, assisted by Mike Piluso. The Hitties got their PP going as Brandon Kozun, back from the World Juniors and trying to reclaim his scoring lead, potted the go-ahead goal. Cody Beach and Connor Redmond dropped the mitts, tangling early in the first. A few minutes later, former Giant Mischa Fisenko padded that lead, chasing Mark Segal from the net. Cody Sylvester added to the Hitmen tally mid-second. Matt MacKenzie threaded one through from the point late in the period, giving Calgary a commanding four goal lead. Sylvester wasn’t just finding the net he was throwing down, in one the best lightweight tilts lasting a long time, with both players throwing big haymakers. Gallagher was on the other side and he was full money for his part in the battle getting the eventual take-down after an extended bout.
The Giants got one late in the third, as Craig Cunningham padded his stats in a game that was woefully out of reach. Any quality chances the Giants did fight for were thwarted by the solid goaltending of Martin Jones. The Hitmen went 2 for 2 on their PP chances, while holding the G’s to 0 for 5. Calgary out shot the G-Men 30-21. The Giants needed great goaltending to compete and they did not get it. The Giants head down to Medicine Hat to take on the Tigers on Sunday. Puck drops there at 6pm local time (5pm PST).
