VANCOUVER BC – The Vancouver Giants have picked two players with local hockey ties in the opening rounds of the WHL Bantam Draft.

The Vancouver Giants have selected Centre Dalton Sward (94) from Abbotsford BC with their first selection (21st overall) in today’s WHL Bantam Draft. FROM ISS:

Mathieu Bellerive – Pursuit of Excellence Kelowna. A tough as nails kind of player, Bellerive plays very well in the physical aspects of the game. He has a great solid frame and shows fantastic strength in fighting off sticks and checks to get off his above average shot. A good quick skater, Bellerive is very strong with stops and starts and will often dump the puck and chase it hard. His strong offensive instincts provide intense pressure on opposing defensemen. Bellerive has a good move set to go with good agility. His 4 goals in 5 games were tied for the team lead during the St. Albert Bantam AAA tournament.

3rd  round pick..

Blake Orban

http://powerplayerscouting.com/sr2009_blakeorban.htm

Blake Orban
Team: Calgary Bisons (AMBHL)
Position: Defence/Centre
Shoots: Right
Height: 6' 0"
Weight: 183 lbs
DOB: January 28 1994
Draft Status: WHL Eligible 2009
Times Viewed: 12
2009 Stats: 32GP 17G 20A** 37PTS 90PIM

Blake Orban is an offensive defenseman who can be used as an effective forward as well. Blake likes to play a physical game and has the size to back it up. His hits are very solid and more often than not create turnovers for his team. When controlling the puck Blake is very calm, never seeming to get rushed. This along with his speed and puck handling ability allows him to make good outlet passes or make end to end rushes which often lead to scoring chances. His soft hands allow him to use the touch pass effectively. When in the offensive zone Blake is able to hold the zone well and get shots through to the net consistently. He also mixes his shots up well, not always looking for the slapshot from the point; willing and able to take wristshots or snapshots as well. Blake also has good hockey sense shown in his one ice communication, his ability to read and anticipate the play and his positional play in his own zone.
